It’s every dog owner’s nightmare when your pup comes running back from the yard smelling terrible. Chances are, they’ve had a run-in with a skunk!

Before you reach for the hose — stop right there!

Getting your dog wet with water before neutralizing the skunk oils can actually make the smell much worse and cause it to linger in their coat and skin for 2–3 months.

Step-by-Step: The Best Skunk Smell Removal Remedy

Here’s a tried-and-true solution you can mix up right at home:

You’ll need:

  • 4–6 cups of baking soda

  • 1 bottle (about 1 quart) of hydrogen peroxide

  • 1 cup of Dawn dish soap

Directions:

  1. Mix everything together in a large bowl or bucket.

  2. Apply the mixture generously to your dog’s dry coat — make sure to avoid the eyes and mouth!

  3. Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes to break down the skunk oils.

  4. Rinse thoroughly, then follow up with your favorite pet-safe shampoo.

Pro tip: If your dog was wearing a collar or leash, soak those items in the same solution for about 15 minutes before rinsing and washing.

Afterward, towel dry your pup and give them lots of love — they’ve been through enough excitement for one day!

Bonus Tip: If the smell still lingers or your dog’s skin seems irritated, it’s always a good idea to schedule a professional grooming appointment. Our team can help deep-clean your dog’s coat safely and get them smelling fresh again.
